Carolyn Wright photographs Alice Saland in her studio on Friday afternoon. Wright has owned a studio since 1981. First she was in town at two separate locations and now she is working out of her studio in Eldorado.
Some people positively do not enjoy having their pictures taken.

Carolyn Wright said this is one of the factors she takes into consideration when she is snapping a photo of someone, either for a highschool graduation, a wedding announcement or a company advertisement.

“If you can get them to feel comfortable, it shows in their face,” she said.

Wright, who has been a professional photographer for more than 25 years, recently moved her photography business back to Eldorado where it started. She has been working in Santa Fe for the past 18 years.

Wright said her studio was the first in the area to offer custom black-and-white printing. Also, she says her business was one of the first to bring digital proofs to the studio.

The Photography Studio provides clients prints, transparencies and digital files in both color and black and white. The studio offers photographic services and portraits, including corporate, wedding, event coverage, digital manipulation, photo restoration, theatrical photos and products.

“I try to focus on customer service and really hearing what people what,” Wright said. “People don’t like getting their photos taken. We try to make it fun.”

She said everything about photography is about communication, namely nonverbal communication. She said it is important to talk with clients to find out why they want the photos taken and whether it is for the family, a business or to show a product.

Wright said her challenge as a photographer is to correct the things that bother people about their photographs.

“People come in and say, ‘I hate my picture,’ or ‘My face looks fat,’ ” Wright said. “We are our own worst critics.”

Saland, left, views her photographs with Wright after the session. Wright shows her clients their images on the computer right after taking their pictures.

Wright, who graduated from Alfred University in 1978 with a double major in ceramics and photography, said she is skilled in all types of “people” photography and technical “object” photography. She has a background in hand coloring, retouching and archival restoration.

She has taken photos of people with their pets, created CD covers and shot modeling portfolios or political work with governors and mayors. Wright will attend parties or weddings and can make albums of the event. She also can make slides out of pictures, which she usually does for artists who are submitting their work into shows and contests.

“(Wright) always puts you at ease,” said Fred Raznick, a real-estate agent who lives in Eldorado.

Raznick said Wright has been documenting his professional growth and his family for more than 20 years. He also uses his photos in advertisements for his business. Raznick has used another photographer only once, and he said when he looked at his proofs, he immediately called Wright to have them re-done.

The two also knew each other from their volunteer work for the Eldorado Fire Department.

Wright said she is pleased to bring her business back to Eldorado this September, saying it was time to come back home. Wright and her husband, Johnny Martinez, have moved back to her parents’ home, a white, two-story house where The Photography Studio is now located. She converted her old garage into the studio space.

The house was built before the Eldorado covenants were in place. Her parents bought it in 1979 and her father was one of the first members of the fire department when it was the Eldorado Fire Brigade.

In her studio, she has a selection of photographs, including her daughter Rebecca’s graduation photos, last year’s New Mexico House of Representatives and a portrait of Gene Hackman and Daniel Lenihan, authors of a book published this year called Justice for None.

Her work has won awards, such as an ad for the Burrito Company in 1988 and a double-exposure print of bronze work done by Star York.

Most of her work is done by appointment and she works mostly on location, although she has many custom backgrounds and scenes on file.
